Have you noticed how surprisingly resilient the world has become?  Sure, the markets react, some prices soar relative to supply & demand, countries policies adapt, organisations and businesses respond to manage their position and future projections.  We’ve become so adept to changes, all the more drastic, that we start to take shifts in the market in our stride.  We’ve survived a pandemic, almost re-written our daily ways of working and our offices are now mostly at home with only some returning to the conventional office space in the city.  In an economy where we were downgraded to junk status not too long ago we’ve seen record activity in the property market and extreme interest & price growth in the coastal areas.  If you’ve been struggling to take the leap into property ownership from the rental sector, don’t let the increasing lending rate deter you, at 7.75% it is STILL lower than pre-covid rates.  And with South Africa currently having one of the most competitive bond versus rental rates in the world, where the difference between owning and renting a home of the same value is on average only 0.8%.  Thus, it is still the best financial decision you can make to rather buy than rent.

Another drastic world event has struck at the end of February when Russia invaded Ukraine and the knock-on effect this has on world markets and future projections are already taking affect, gas prices soaring and food supply & production following closely behind it, I take comfort that we will be as resilient as we’ve proven to be before.  Yes, it will have an effect on our pocket but we will adapt and plan accordingly.  The unfortunate immediate result however, is over 10 million Ukrainian residents that were forced to flee their homes and losing everything that they’ve managed to build in their lifetime, some sadly losing their loved ones as well.  Some 3.5 million refugees has since managed to cross borders to seek safety in neighboring countries, the rest are still in country and fast running out of food & medical supplies.  A Mossel Bay local, and one of my old clients and friends was hard hit with the news when things unraveled in Ukraine, knowing that his wife, a Ukrainian national, was now trapped in the midst of this developing situation while visiting her family.  When they finally managed to make contact again, his wife Natalia decided not to flee and return to SA but stay and assist the many refugees that are grouped together and in desperate need of aid. She started coordinating aid operations with local organisations and De Villiers managed to partnered with Gift of the Givers and UAZA (Ukrainian Association of South Africa) and together they now provide direct relief to refugees by means of public donations through the Star Angels organisation spearheading the operations to aid them with food & medical supplies.  De Villiers, knowing that I am a member of Round Table reached out to me to extend the network of potential contributors to the relief fund, and I am honoured to state that in the last week all of the Tables within the Southern Cape have joined forces with pledged donations and driving a campaign to simplify collecting donations from the public.  If you have the ways and means to contribute to this cause, please reach out to me to find out how you can donate directly to your local Table.

I also had the privilege this past month of joining the prestige event where Rauch Gertenbach Attorneys celebrated their centenary.  What a fantastic event with live entertainment from Stef Kruger, great food and being able to network with individuals from a wide spectrum of industries and businesses.  Celebrating a 100 years of business is a true testament of exceptional service and a company that stood the test of time.  To many more Rauch Gertenbach, it is always a pleasure doing business with you.
